Activity overview

Vallibierna in two days: refuge, private guide and summit

You walk up to the Cap de Llauset refuge, sleep at 2,425 metres and set off early for the summit of Vallibierna. Splitting the ascent over two days lets you walk with time to spare, adapt to the group and enjoy the lakes and the Maladeta massif without turning the mountain into a race.

The activity costs from €100 per person for a group of 4. The guide is private and exclusive to your group, with a minimum of 2 participants. The base price does not include the refuge, packed lunch or transport. If you want the full experience, we can put together a package on request with half board, packed lunch, logistics coordination and optional transport.

Objective route difficulty

MIDE rating for Vallibierna from the Cap de Llauset refuge

MIDE (the Spanish hiking difficulty scale) is an official method that rates the difficulty of a walk from 1 to 5. These figures refer to the out-and-back section between the Cap de Llauset refuge and the Tuca de Vallibierna, in normal summer conditions.

Before you book

Is this ascent for you?

You don't need any climbing experience, but you do need to be used to walking on uneven mountain terrain and be happy to go along with the rhythms of a refuge. Check at a glance.

Great fit

You'll love it if…

  • You already do 6-8 hour mountain walks and can take on around 700 m of ascent over uneven ground with energy to spare.
  • You are excited to climb your first 3,000-metre peak with time, support and no pressure to make it a race.
  • You want the full experience: a night in a refuge, an early start and high mountain lakes.
  • You value a private guide who adapts the pace and the decisions to your group.
Worth a second look

It might not be for you if…

  • You are not yet comfortable walking for several hours over boulders, scree or sustained ascent.
  • You don't want to get up early, sleep in a shared dormitory or fit in with a refuge's timetable.
  • You are looking for climbing or a technical ridge: the standard ascent of Vallibierna does not include the Paso del Caballo.
  • You need a guaranteed summit; in the high mountains the guide may change the plan for safety reasons.

Private group

A private guide for your group

The activity is reserved exclusively for your group. The total price is split between participants, so the more of you there are, the less each person pays, with no change to the route, the attention you get or the guide's judgement.

Who'll be with you on this activity

Javier Gil

For Javier, knowing the path is the least of it. What makes the difference is reading the day: deciding on the go whether to push on to the summit, wait a little or look for another option, and never forcing the climb when the terrain, the weather or the group itself are not up to it.

Before confirming your place, he talks to you to find out about your real mountain experience and fitness. It is not a formality: it is what lets him fine-tune the pace on day 2 and judge whether the Paso del Caballo towards Culebras makes sense for your group.

The activity, day by day

Llauset reservoir - Cap de Llauset refuge

DAY 1

Llauset reservoir - Cap de Llauset refuge

  • Cap de Llauset refuge
  • Dinner and breakfast at the refuge (not included in the base rate)

You set off from Aneto and head up to the Llauset reservoir, at 2,200 metres: by taxi if you prefer, or in your own car if you don't mind a track in poor condition. From there you walk to the Cap de Llauset refuge, already at 2,425 metres, with the Maladeta massif in front of you. The afternoon is for settling in, checking your gear and resting before the summit.

Vallibierna summit (3,067 m) and return

DAY 2

  • Breakfast and a packed lunch for the day (not included in the base rate)

You leave the refuge before dawn. The route climbs among lakes and high mountain terrain to the summit of Vallibierna. From the top you get a close-up view of the Maladeta and Aneto. You then descend to the refuge and carry on down to Llauset.

Caring for the environment

Good practice

In the mountains

  • You take all your rubbish home, including organic waste (fruit peel, leftover food), and pick up any litter you find if you can do so safely.
  • You always stay on the marked path, without cutting corners between zigzags or trampling the high mountain vegetation.
  • If there is wildlife nearby, you watch it from a distance, without approaching or feeding it.
  • You don't pick plants or take stones or anything else from the environment.

At the refuge

  • From 9 pm you keep noise to a minimum; after that, you always respect the quiet hours set by the refuge.
  • You use water sensibly: in a high mountain refuge it is a limited resource.
  • You follow the refuge rules on footwear, lockers and mealtimes.
  • You leave your bunk and the shared spaces as you would like to find them.
  • You don't use soap or toiletries in lakes, streams or springs.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us

01Is Vallibierna a good first 3,000-metre peak?

Yes, as long as you are already used to walking in the mountains. It is one of the most accessible 3,000-metre peaks in the Pyrenees, but it is still high mountain terrain and requires fitness, the right gear and good weather.

02Do I need technical high mountain experience?

No climbing is required in normal summer conditions, but you do need experience walking over boulders, scree and steep high mountain slopes. If there is snow, ice or bad weather, the guide may require extra equipment, adapt the route or cancel the ascent.

03Can I do it if I have a fear of heights?

It depends on how strong your fear of heights is. The normal route avoids the Paso del Caballo, but the summit area and some sloping terrain can feel airy. We talk it through with you before confirming the booking.

04What happens if the weather is bad?

The group's safety always comes first. If conditions are not good, the guide may delay the summit push, suggest an alternative or cancel the ascent.

05Can we also climb Culebras peak?

Yes, by linking Vallibierna and Culebras via the Paso del Caballo (a grade II- ridge between the two summits). It is a separate extension costing +€70 per person on top of the base price: it requires a harness, an energy-absorbing lanyard and karabiners, and more of the guide's time for the exposed section. Let us know when you book if you would like to combine both summits.

06How much does the ascent cost?

From €100 per person if there are 4 of you (€400 for the group), €120 per person for 3 (€360 for the group) and €160 per person for 2 (€320 for the group). A €50 deposit secures the date and is deducted from the total. Before paying, you receive the included services and the change and cancellation conditions in writing. Adding Culebras costs +€70 per person. If you would rather have a complete package with the refuge, packed lunch and transport included, we can put one together on request (see below).
