Activity overview

The real birds of the Pyrenees, with an ornithologist guide

A half-day outing to watch and identify the birds of the Val d'Aran, Upper Ribagorça and Pallars Sobirà: from the bearded vulture and golden eagle to rock-face specialists like the wallcreeper or ptarmigan, and the black woodpecker and dipper in forest and river. The guide chooses the area and timing based on the target species and season, and teaches you to identify calls and silhouettes. Seeing a specific species is never guaranteed: what is guaranteed is an ornithologist's eye for looking in the right place.

Additional information

  • Sightings are never guaranteed

As with any outing to watch wild birds, seeing a specific species depends on the season, the time of day and the day's conditions. The guide maximises the chances, but never guarantees them.

  • The area and target species shape the route

The Val d'Aran, Upper Ribagorça and Pallars Sobirà offer very different habitats over a short distance: the guide chooses the starting point based on which species are most likely that day and time of year.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us

01Is seeing a specific species guaranteed?

No, no operator can guarantee that. The guide chooses the area and timing based on the target species and season to maximise the chances.

02What species can you see?

It depends on the area and season: birds of prey such as the bearded vulture, golden eagle or griffon vulture; high-mountain specialists such as the wallcreeper or ptarmigan; and forest and river species such as the black woodpecker or dipper.

03Do I need previous birdwatching experience?

No, none at all. The guide adapts the pace and explanations both for beginners and for those who already have experience identifying birds.

04Is it suitable for children?

Yes, it's a calm activity. It works best with children already used to walking and staying quiet outdoors.

05What should I bring?

Layered mountain clothing, comfortable footwear and, if you have them, your own binoculars (we provide the guide's).

06How long does the outing last?

Half a day, between 3 and 4 hours, timed to the slot with the most activity for that day's target species.

07What is the best time for birdwatching in the Pyrenees?

From April to June, in the middle of the breeding season, when song and activity from high-mountain species peak, and in late September, during the raptor migration. Bearded vulture, golden eagle and griffon vulture can be seen all year round.

08Can you see the bearded vulture in the Pyrenees?

Yes, it's a resident species present all year in the Pyrenees and the number-one target for most birdwatchers. As with any wild animal, a sighting is never guaranteed: the guide chooses the area and timing to maximise the chances.

09What does the price include?

The guide, who has professional training and experience in ornithology, for the whole outing, and binoculars for watching. Transport to the starting point and travel and cancellation insurance are not included.

10What's the price for fewer than 4 people?

The price per person drops the bigger the group: €85/person for 2, €75/person for 3, and €55/person from 4 upwards (recommended group size, up to 6).
