Trip overview

8x4000 Challenge in the High Atlas

The High Atlas is much more than Toubkal. Over several days we move through its main mountains with one clear aim: to try to reach eight peaks above 4,000 metres, based at the Toubkal refuge. Toubkal, West Toubkal, Ras, Timesguida, Akioud, North Afella, South Afella and Biguinnoussene make up a demanding route in which the summits matter as much as our ability to adapt to the mountain. An Ecotour guide, who has personally walked the main routes, plus a local team.

Who will be with you on this trip

Ecotour (Javier Gil) and the local High Atlas team

Toubkal, West Toubkal, Ras and Timesguida have been walked personally by the head of Ecotour, who guides the trip together with the local High Atlas mountain team.

The plan for each day is decided on the ground. The aim is the eight summits, but the priority is always to get down safely from each one.

Additional information

  • Safety always comes before the itinerary

The weather, ground conditions, snow, wind, how the group is going and any other relevant factor may mean changing a day or giving up a summit. The final decision on whether to continue an activity rests with the guide team. Booking the trip does not guarantee reaching all eight summits.

  • Travel insurance and rescue

You must travel with insurance that covers medical assistance, high-altitude mountain activity and rescue, as well as cancellation cover.

  • Gear according to conditions

Depending on the time of year and snow or ice conditions, the guide team may ask for additional gear such as crampons or an ice axe. Whether a helmet or rope is needed on the Akioud, Afella and Biguinnoussene days is confirmed with the local team before each departure.

  • Consecutive days at altitude

There are several consecutive mountain days above 3,000 metres. It is best to arrive well trained, stay well hydrated and tell your guide about any symptom of altitude sickness.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us

01Are all eight summits always completed?

Summits are never guaranteed. The weather, ground conditions, snow, wind and how the group is going may mean changing a day or giving up a summit. The final decision on whether to continue any activity always rests with the guide team.

02Do I need to be a climber?

No. You do not need to be a climber, but you do need previous mountain experience, good fitness and the ability to handle several consecutive days with significant elevation gain at altitudes above 4,000 m. This is not an easy trek.

03What gear do I need?

The basic mountain kit (boots, thermal layers, windproof jacket, gloves, hat, sunglasses, poles). Depending on the time of year and snow or ice conditions, the guide team may ask for additional gear such as crampons or an ice axe.

04Are Toubkal, Ras and Timesguida technical?

Those days have been walked personally by the head of Ecotour. In normal dry conditions they present no significant technical difficulty for people used to mountain terrain.

05What happens in an emergency?

In the high mountains the itinerary never comes before safety. The guide team keeps in communication and knows alternative descent routes; any decision to evacuate is theirs on the ground.

06How do I book and how does payment work?

Write to us and tell us about your mountain experience, and we will help you judge whether this challenge suits you. The price and final conditions are confirmed with you before going ahead.
